In the 70s I believe, Singapore took a hard line against Vietnamese boat people and did not let them land in Singapore. People died on the seas. Singapore had the right idea, which they still have - illegals are not permitted to enter the country. No exceptions.
I agree with the position but not the actions. There is no valid reason to sink ships or let the passengers die. Either escort the ship back to its port of origin or take the passengers off and ship them back. Once word gets out that illegals are not welcome the flow will stop.
