Pretty sure we absorbed them for the most part. They had a very advanced culture for the time they existed, larger brains and more muscle mass than we had but a longer gestation period to give birth, we bred with them, out bred them, took over food sources, likely killed a lot of them but they still exist within us like a few other hominids.
