Rage Against the Machine has always been massively for communism and "affirmative racial justice."
Not to a small degree either. It's basically their entire schtick. They've been going around waving communist flags, while wearing shirts with communist icons, and singing about communism.
That "fuck you I won't do what you tell me" line refers to perceived racists and fascists and that the government and police forces are heavily infiltrated by klan members.
Which of course, was a serious theme in the rest of the media at the time. Rage Against the Machine was just as much of a corporate band as Backstreet Boys or N'Sync.
Say what you want about boy bands and teenie-pop but at least they don't pretend to be agents of social change; singing about uprisings in the name of "ending fascism" and the joys of communism while making millions.
90's left-wing "socially-conscious" bands were just as cringy as 80's left-wing socially conscious bands. Listen to a Rage album today if you don't believe me, it's an experience every bit as awkward as watching the "do they know it's Christmas" celebrity charity song video.
The 90s left is the same as today's left, their aim has always been "massive, overwhelming social control to save us from the bad people" and by "bad people" they've always defined that as those who engage in wrong-think, and disagree with their socially-reinforced opinions.
Especially Rage Against the Machine. It's literally the only thing they sing about.
RATM seems cringe to me now in retrospect. I just find it amusing that the left's anthem in 1992 was literally "Fuck You I Won't Do What You Tell me" to now being all in favor of fucking lockdowns in 2020. lmao. Does defiance of authority only apply to police officers and the military? You can defy cops and the military but you must obey the scientists and Democratic governors and mayors? lmao
There's literally no left-libertarian dude weed lmao "the government can't tell us what to do maaaaaan" voices to this lockdown. It's unreal. Anyone who is like that is low-key about their power level. And I was one of those type of dudes in 2000. I saw conservatives as judgy religious people who forced Christianity down our throat, who deferred too much to authority, who worshiped police and the military. But now it's the left that is deferring to authority. It's the right that is edgy now. I was happy to see that https://www.reddit.com/r/LockdownCriticalLeft/ actually exists. On r/onguardforthee and liberal twitter they demand to be locked down like DOGS. Except for a black cocks matter protest of course.
