It's funny but it has to do with trespass laws. I would assume that his front door has a big-ass No Trespassing sign. Basically if you walk around that gate (especially if it's locked) you are committing much more serious degree of trespass than without it.

You would more commonly see this on a farmhouse with a long driveway.

So basically the gate works unlike the dumbass plexiglass.
