China doesn't need Canada to teach it how to operate in cold weather. China has plenty of snow, and they're already trained and equipped to operate in it.

These winter warfare exercises are mostly equipment-centric. How to set up and tear down the arctic tent. How to run and maintain the stoves and lanterns. How to use the snowshoes. Because the tactics don't change in the winter time. The equipment is all that changes. The Chinese army has different equipment, making all this training moot.

For the most part, serious international joint training is usually about building interoperability by harmonizing tactics/techniques/procedures in prep for joint operations overseas. Token "training" like this which neither country really needs is diplomatic in nature.
So this was NOT done because China needed Canada to teach them how to operate in winter conditions (they don't). This was a diplomatic gesture. Likely a statement to the Trump admin about who's side Canada is on re: China vs the US..
Exactly. And there is a step above where they invite Chinese Officers to courses at staff college.
