Republicans have often shit all over civil liberties as well. See: Government surveillance after 9/11. See: Civil forfeiture. If a cop suspects you of selling drugs with no evidence, they'll just take your cash and use it to buy stuff for the police department. I've known people who have been arrested by alphabet soup agencies for selling crypto-currency for cash without a MSB loicense.
Politicians on both sides have long set fire to the US Constitution. Don't get me started on the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. And even if what the federal and provincial governemnts is doing isn't justified by the Charter (there is a provision there about reasonable limits or some shit), the judges do whatever the feel like here. You can claim a medical mask exemption (and the by-law says you don't have to provide evidence) and the police will arrest you anyways in Ontario. And the judges will probably back up the cops.
The reality is that 'Democrat' and 'Republican' aren't ideologies or movements in themselves, they are more akin to brands like Coke vs Pepsi or sports teams.
Democracy is actually a big reason why we have so much authoritarianism today - every person gets one vote, regardless of whether they are a model citizen that practices self-responsibility or a fuck up who is a burden on society. Sounds great on paper and in concept, but you see the real consequences in practice.
The problem with 'democracy' is when people decide they can vote to take other people's property for themselves. Eventually it will devolve into mass looting and destruction, like you would see in Ferguson or Portland. The only difference is that they are destroying the institutions that once guarded against tyranny.
Honestly ask yourself this - if you don't own property or pay taxes why the fuck should your vote count? You have no skin in the game, nothing to protect, the ONLY reason to vote would be to take from someone else.
This is the root of why socialism is so attractive to the growing number of millennial age and younger fuckups - gibs me dat.
Illegal immigrants - gibs me dat
"Refugees" - gibs me dat.
"Students" with too much voluntary student debt - gibs me dat.
The taxpayer pays the cost of all this fucking nonsense, and yet, their vote is cancelled out by waves of losers that refuse to take responsibility for their actions. To them, the government is nothing more than an ATM.

The way things are going, left and right are easiest to describe as those that receive from the system and those that pay into the system.
