Walmart, Amazon, etc are all for 15 an hour. They know it will cripple small business, which will be a boon for Walmart, Amazon, etc.
Then when small businesses fail, big box etc take over their excess business, then Walmart, Amazon, etc lay off or fire thousands of workers to pay for the 15 an hour.
It's a script they follow in every country that wants to raise minimum wage.
Didn’t Bernie get caught paying his campaign staff less than MW?
Govs LOOOOVE min wage. The higher they set it, the more income tax they collect.
Call me nuts but how about oh I dunno, taxing people less so they get a pay rise? Too sensible. It will never work...
Why $15, why not $25?
$25 an hour seems to be a reasonable wage for someone flipping burgers or delivering fliers?
Only politicians support a minimum wage, not economists.
Fact is, Minimum wage hasn't kept up with inflation. These workers make significantly less than that of a Minimum wage worker a generation ago.
Politicians are just creating another slave underclass by stalling on this.
Minimum wage is a scam. It's far better to let the market decide the price of labour, there would be more work for everyone.
People like to bitch about how low the minimum wage is in certain states in the US, but the US traditionally has had the most opportunity for economic mobility.
Labour is like any other commodity, its value dictates its price. If you don't learn a skill and expect to earn a 'living wage' flipping burgers, I have bad news for you - that skill is not worth much and thanks to minimum wage laws, will likely be automated until those jobs barely even exist anymore. Congratulations big government!
IT was sexy back in the day because the skills weren't as common and the infrastructure required expansion (the Internet IMO was the ''final frontier"), but the market has recognized this and now there are tons of people from India/China/etc willing to do the work for less. Jobs are less plentiful too, as 20 years of business analysis and efficiency programs have worked to automate as much as possible to reduce overhead. I have seen these things firsthand.
That said, it doesn't have much to do with minimum wage, which is simply a form of price fixing. It favours the monopolization of the service industry by artificially putting small business at a disadvantage. If I want to moonlight as a cashier or a casino dealer or w/e, I should be allowed to negotiate my own hourly wage with my employer.
Importing unskilled labour will likely result in more welfare recipients as Canada's economy is trash thanks to government's anti-resource agenda. I get your point about flooding the market with cheap labour but I do believe in borders and restricting access to our country. While most economies are mixed, it is harder to push toward a more 'free-market' style when we have a welfare state as the immigrants know that if they fail to compete, they can just sit on the benefits.
Canadians are subsidizing cheap foreign labour by providing benefits and handouts for immigrants and that is definitely not a free market concept. When the European settlers came in the 19th/early 20th century, there was no safety net. Their success came from their own hands. When you get right down to it, that's what we are missing today.
