There there was nothing wrong with Harper. There is plenty wrong with Trudeau.
Again, that doesn't matter. You're dealing in objective truths when all that matters in an election is voter's subjective interpretations. Unless that is you have some secret method planned to convince Trudeau supporters that there's something wrong with Trudeau, where all other attempts to do so have failed.
What I'm trying to tell you is that objective "right" and "wrong" have no role in determining election outcomes. It only matters what people believe. More accurately, how many people believe in X or Y. The truth of X or Y doesn't matter. That's why we've got Trudeau as PM right now. The truth about Trudeau is that he's a self-loathing, intellectually challenged, silver-spoon trust fund baby with no life experience and who isn't even qualified to manage a lemonade stand, let alone a country. But that being objective truth didn't stop him two elections, did it?
Saying you were just like the guy that brought you to disaster helps you how?
Because an absurdly high proportion of the electorate actually like that guy and don't see what he's done as a disaster.
What do you do when someone says "Trump turned America into a disaster!"? You roll your eyes. Well that's what Trudeau supporters do too. Again, the objective troth doesn't matter because the majority of voters are immune to reason.
By not radcially differentiating himself from Trudeau, what O'toole is doing is making himself appealing enough to moderate swing voters (who previously voted Trudeau) that they might switch their vote to O'toole if Trudeau's failures since taking office amount to enough.
And O'toole isn't saying "I'm just like Trudeau". That's how you're choosing to interpret it because you're angry at him for not saying the things you want to hear - things that would guarantee he loses the next election.
