I started a garden for the first time in a long time, but I have never grown potatoes before. I planted some when I planted everything else, and looking online I see people's plants are about up to their ankle in height when they are harvested. Before anyone asks, I have mounded them up twice, and have just laid down a bed of cut grass as mulch for them.
My russets are up to my waist right now, and some are falling over. They are all healthy, but for a 6' 2" guy like me, I am wondering of I should trim them back or just let them keep growing? Thank you for any help you guys can provide, and I am sorry that this is really off topic to what this board is about.
Potatoes are my #8 favorite fruit.
I keep the flowers on mine.
If you plant them pretty straight, you can cross dig about 3” or so laterally to the plants, thereby harvesting the potatoes without damaging the plants so they can continue to grow and produce until frost.
I usually start my potatoes around late February or early March, indoors, by rooting some bigger eyes with about 1 1/2” piece of potato. This way they are ready to plant when the ground softens and warms up.
Anyone from PEI with additional or better info?
Happy spud growing!
