Politicians care more about getting re-elected than following principle. If Ontario went the Sweden route and far more elderly and sick people died in the process of more relaxed measures as we saw with Sweden, Doug Ford would be very unpopular with the swing voters in the suburbs who won him the election. My riding in the burbs goes back and forth between the Liberals and Tories a lot.
It's very difficult to protect the vulnerable populations from everyone else when a high percentage of adult children in Peel and other suburbs live with their parents/grandparents in multi-generational households because they can't afford rent due to the housing supply shortage in Southern Ontario. The rental vacancy rate in Toronto and Peel is anemic. Ontario could have done way more to protect the nursing homes though. That is something they could have done without too much burden.
I understand why Doug Ford felt pressured to re-open as slowly as he did. But there was no win-win situation here. There was a tremendous cost to society with the initial stay-at-home order and the shuttering of non-essential businesses and social distancing laws.
Ultimately our government decided to sacrifice the young for the elderly and sick. Probably because the elderly are far more likely to actually vote. While young people mostly don't vote because we realize how retarded the political system is.
It really irritates me how young people are shamed for catching the virus (a high percentage of cases are in the under 40 class) and unintentionally infecting elderly and sick relatives. It's like yeah let's be hikikomori shut-ins until a vaccine that may never come or be all that effective and sacrifice our careers, social lives and love lives for the elderly and sick. Holy fuck.
Sweden's deaths per capita is like 3x Ontario's (571 per mil vs 189.5 per mil). If the death rate in Ontario was 3x what we have now, the liberal media would be attacking Doug Ford relentlessly and he'd lose the swing districts in the burbs and such. I understand why he did what he did out of political self-preservation.
Being a politician isn't easy. Voters are literal fucking NPCs. This was a lose-lose situation no matter what decision was going to be made. The Swedish strategy "flatten the curve and no goal post shifting" I think was the harm reduction strategy. But the Swedish death rate is a hard sell for voters. Even now the liberal media is still talking shit about Sweden and Dr. Anders Tegnell even though they crushed their curve and the coronavirus might actually be done for good in Sweden now.
Heck the USA is catching up fast to Sweden's deaths per capita and look at how CNN, MSNBC, NBC, WaPo, etc. is relentlessly attacking the Republicans and damaging Trump and Republican incumbents in the polls.
Liberal voters are not likely to vote for him, conservative voters will be pissed at his decisions. I don't see a win here for him.
The soyboys and soygirls are never going to vote for him no matter what. Those are not the voters Ford is worried about. It's the swing voters who voted for the Ontario Liberals/NDP in 2014 and him in 2018 that Doug Ford is trying to hold on to. I live in a suburban swing district. A lot of people here are afraid of their elderly and sick relatives and friends catching this virus. There are lots of multi-generational households in the burbs. There is a serious housing shortage in the burbs.
When people think of suburbs, they typically think of white people, a single family household with 2 parents, 2 kids, a dog and a white picket fence. That is not Peel brah. Peel, Halton, York Region, Durham, Etobicoke, North York, Scarborough, East York and York (Toronto borough) have more in common with the suburbs of Paris or Malmo than Leave it to Beaver.
Here in Mississauga, our city council was totally all about masks, lockdowns, social distancing, etc. Meanwhile pretty much the entire city went to Doug Ford provincially. The suburban Toronto voter is way different than what you see in Alberta.
I think that using Sweden numbers as a baseline comparison is really uhh icky ? ha idk, seems an extreme outlier and maybe look at Taiwan stuff (other than that contract tracing Neo-Statsi shit)
Taiwan acted EARLY to contain the virus compared to the west though. They put out travel restrictions to and from Wuhan and later China very fast. They had a Chinese travel ban while the west was saying that Chinese travel bans were racist. Literal fucking Chinese people (Taiwanese) had a Chinese travel ban. Yet white liberals call Chinese travel bans racist.
Like sure if we shut down the border back in January, had hardcore civil liberty violating Taiwanese/Singapore/Hong Kong style contact tracing apps that GPS track people who are supposed to quarantine, then we would be able to have a low body count without shuttering much of the economy. My girlfriend is Cantonese from Hong Kong. The Chinese are all about sacrificing individual liberty for your elders and society. It's a very different society from ours. They wear masks without the government forcing them to do it, etc.
I don't think there is a grand conspiracy to make society like this though. Politicians would have to be pretty retarded to deliberately sabotage the world economy unless they felt they had to to get re-elected. Since re-election trumps everything for a politician. Politicians are just deathly afraid of getting booted out of office and will do everything to get re-elected at all costs. The fear of mortality makes humans demand really stupid shit from politicians and this virus is more lethal than any of the recent respiratory viruses in human history. Save for the rare shit like 2003 SARS, MERS and Ebola. While this virus mostly kills the elderly and sick, a lot of people know someone who is elderly and/or sick. Facing the potential mortality of a loved one makes some people very mentally ill. I have witnessed irrational insanity within my own family during this pandemic.
The voters begged for the government's boot on their neck. And politicians want to get re-elected at all costs. If Doug Ford wasn't going to put the boot on their neck, they were going to beg for the Liberal Party's boot in 2022.
Yeah all the swing of the variables and impossibility of really comparing properly w/diff metrics, bad nums, blah blah.
Maybe since CAN and AUS are two of (or were) the most similar countries comparison to everything before the Melbourne mutt-vector cunts causing getting their nails did and all the dick they could handle!
