Everybody is misinterpreting what happened.

There hasn't been a problem with alt-right opinions on that sub. The problem is that there is a troll who has been posting Nazi imagery and literal pornography on that sub under various alts. It's just one troll. Hence the 'alt-right' stuff. The stuff he was posting didn't even have anything to do with Star Trek.

Normally, mods would put a stop to this, but there's only one mod on the sub, and thus it's slow for him to react to the 15 or so posts of porn and hate speech imagery that this troll posts in a row.

The problem was compounded when, instead of responding to the trolls by pledging to recruit more mods or even just setting up Automoderator to block people with zero/negative karma, the mod just locked down the thread. Meanwhile the troll was still posting hardcore pornography and hate speech which wasn't being removed (because the mod was arguing with us users asking for better moderation instead). Like, the troll was literally making new submissions while the mod was busy arguing with his users, instead of just banning the troll right away.

The sub's at almost 5000 users, and is undermoderated. That's the real problem.

Never understood why alt-right Trek fans exist but they apparently do. They're the type to have bad takes on the series. They'll say things like "the federation is really a totalitarian government no different than the Romulan empire" and "Gul dukat did nothing wrong." Fortunately they don't make up a majority of trekkies. They're just a very loud minority who are very active and use the series as a proxy in the culture war.
