They turned the comments off. I wish I screenshotted the comments before they whacked them. The Canadian people are waking up.
I am a small-l liberal and don't consider myself a conservative at all. The Liberal Party has become very illiberal over the years. Liberalism is about not wanting the government to interfere in your day to day life. But the Liberal Party is all about the government ruling every aspect of your life.
While I know that some libertarians argue for lockdowns because "your freedom doesn't mean you have the freedom to spread your germs to others" it's worth noting that in herd immunity Sweden, only 0.0577% of the population died with COVID-19. With Sweden having an average life expectancy of 82.31 years and assuming a proportional population, in any given year about 1.2% of the population is going to die within any given year. As such, the people who die with COVID-19 make up less than 5% of total annual deaths in Sweden. If Sweden's population is aging too much, then more than 1.2% of the population dies within a given year. And if less than 1.2% die within a year, it's only because of the mass immigration Sweden receives boosting the numbers of the young.
We decided to give away our civil liberties in an effort to save 0.0577% of the population? And it's worth nothing that already 0.0242% of Canada died from COVID-19. And that's with lockdowns, social distancing and mandatory mask mandates in the summer months in many parts of the country. Quebec's death rate is already higher than Sweden's. Though Quebec put sick nursing home patients back into nursing homes like Cuomo did in New York so it's unclear how close Quebec is to Swedish herd immunity. And there is probably more obesity, diabetes, heart disease, etc. in Quebec than in Sweden. But I have to imagine that the death rate in Quebec can't get much higher at this point?
If you are obese and are scared of getting COVID, you have already had six months now to lose weight, get your blood sugar down and boost your immune system.
If they're at risk they should stay home.
A vaccine available for the general pop could still be another 6 months away, maybe even longer. So it is unrealistic to expect the elderly and sick to self-isolate for a year+. COVID Hospitalizations and deaths are inevitable. I still think it's ridiculous that we ran up a deficit of a few hundred billion dollars (and counting) just to protect 0.0577% of the population. And ruined the lives of a lot of people who lost their jobs, businesses, etc. Ruined the lives of a lot of young people experiencing social isolation, delaying of their schooling, careers, etc. And while it's true that death isn't the only metric that matters, the hospitalization rate is like less than double the fatality rate last I checked too. So maybe 0.1% of Canadians are at risk of being hospitalized by COVID.
