There is no nefarious top-down conspiracy. The problem is bottom-up. Most people are NPCs who freak the fuck out over this virus and demand lockdowns, social distancing, unemployment benefits, etc. When you present them with statistics about the virus, they shut down because it doesn't fit their narrative. Justin Trudeau's approval rating over the handling of the pandemic is actually very high. Most people have a family member or friend who is elderly and/or with pre-existing conditions. And so there is a lot of genuine fear in the public over the virus.
Doug Ford is a Conservative and it was him that put in place a stay at home order in Ontario, not Justin Trudeau. It was him that mandated social distancing in Ontario. Not Justin Trudeau. It was our city councils that mandated masks indoors. Not Justin Trudeau. All those businesses in Ontario that shut down permanently, all those people who committed suicide, all those drug overdoses, all the social isolation that is causing depression, that happened due to Doug Ford's state of emergency orders.
The government isn't going to intentionally sabotage the economy unless this is what the voters were asking for. Doug Ford genuinely does not want to destroy the economy. But he felt like he had no other choice because the suburban swing voters who voted for him in 2018 demanded lockdowns and social distancing. And now that Doug Ford has decided to pushback against this public pressure to keep things closed and decided to re-open bars, restaurants, gyms, wedding halls, churches and now schools, he is getting a lot of shit on social media over it. There are plenty of people on Twitter who are arguing that weddings should be postponed until mid-2021, that churches should be closed, that kids shouldn't be in school, etc.
I live in the 905 suburbs. My riding voted for Doug Ford. Suburbanites in my riding like low taxes and don't like welfare recipients. Our city council voted overwhelmingly for masks. 11 to 1. And there are a bunch of snitching Karens here who will snitch on you at the drop of a hat for breaking the COVID bylaws.
Suburban conservatives here are primarily concerned with safety rather than liberty.
Tbh, the media is more to blame than the actual government. The media has been fearmongering about COVID-19 non-stop because it generates ratings and is a boon for them financially.
