You didn't think that China would send us all their cheap goods for nothing in return did you? ;) The Dollar is not the payment. What you get for redeeming those dollars is the payment. And the Chinks want our real estate, they want to own shares in our businesses. I had no idea that our Chink overlords (ie. Tencent) had shares in so many American companies. And I imagine Canadian ones too.
If Canada placed restrictions on Chinese foreign investment, the Canadian Dollar would tank because we don't have the manufacturing to produce our own stuff. It takes time to build factories, re-purpose abandoned warehouses, etc.
The Chinese don't conquer by armies. They do it by business.
There was a documentary on YouTube about this. China has a long history of commercial dominance. We often forget about that because when Mao Zedong took over, China had massive poverty. But then the CCP embraced capitalism more over time and China's fortunes changed for the better. Unfortunately even though the CCP liberalized the Chinese economy, they did not embrace civil liberties. The western hope was that as China got more of a taste of capitalism, the people would want more freedom.
