I find it odd how conservatives can defend capitalism yet speak out against globalism. When Globalism is the evolution of capitalism. The goal of a capitalist is to grow his/her capital as much as possible. So this means making the best investments, regardless of whether these investments are foreign or domestic. And hiring the cheapest labour, which is obviously going to be foreign in our case.
If you place foreign investment restrictions on the economy and restrict hiring of foreign labour, it ceases to be capitalism anymore. If you place these restrictions on the economy, you're going to end up pissing off the wealthy and they are going to pull their capital out of the country and cause capital flight. Which leads to depreciation of the national currency.
What's the main argument you make against socialism? The wealthy is going to pull their capital out of the country and cause capital flight.
The red pill is that we are basically fucked no matter what move we make on the chess board. We have allowed the wealthy elite to consolidate so much capital that if they were to divest from our economy, the number of dollars being dumped on the market would overwhelm the demand for purchasing those dollars. If you place restrictions on foreign investment, the only people who are going to want Canadian Dollars are people who live in Canada. Lower demand + high supply of dollars in circulation = dollar loses value.
I don't agree with the AOC type of crazy like free college, free, free, free, etc. Lockdowns forever, fire up the money printer, etc. The modern left lives in a fantasy land. But you have to acknowledge that globalism is caused by capitalism.
But we don’t live under capitalism, it’s not a free market.
Canada is a command and control economy under the government. Certain corporations get bailouts and subsidies. We have crown corporations and protectionism in many industries that eliminates competition, like in communications companies. We have CANCON that mandates content for television and radio.
We have business lobbies that push for more immigration and TFWs to keep wages low. We have affirmative action hiring that means labour is often not based on supply.
All the major industries in Canada - transportation, energy, media, communications, food, retail...all of them are either monopolies or oligopolies. With almost zero competition. In some cases it’s run by the government entirely and competition is illegal.
Name one country on planet earth that has a "pure" capitalist economy. I'll wait. Take your time. Wealthy people are the most mobile and capital mobile in the fucking world. Why haven't they created Ancapistan? People (including the wealthy) must like government regulation of the economy if Ancapistan hasn't been created yet...
Hong Kong and Singapore come pretty close. But of course no pure capitalist economy exists. But the point isn’t necessarily to find for a pure version of capitalism, but rather to find a system unfettered as much as possible by government intervention.
but rather to find a system unfettered as much as possible by government intervention.
Then stop bitching about globalism. You're advocating for the government preventing Canadians from buying foreign, from foreigners investing in the Canadian economy, from Canadians investing abroad, etc. Are these not government interventions in the economy?
You're making appeals to popularity. Meanwhile you're the ones in this thread whining about globalism destroying the country. Globalism that the people voted for.
