Given our current political options it seems like the best choice. Would also likely strengthen the USA’s defence against a Chinese invasion. They would likely use Canada as landing point and strategic position to attack the USA with ground troops and we all know Trudeau would welcome them in and give each and every one of them some free monopoly, I mean, canadian money.
That's been the unspoken agreement between Canada and the US for decades. Canada does not need to be a global military superpower. It can't be that. The job of Canada's military is to be able to prevent an invading force from getting through Canada to reach the US.
There's only one reason an invader would be looking at Canada - to get through it to an unsecured US border. They aren't interested in Canada itself.
Good politicians are able to recognize this geopolitical position. Bad ones are not. If we cannot hold our own against an invasion, then suddenly the eye of the US military planners are turned north, and that is something we do not want.
It's a self defense strategy - the US is an ally, and that's something we cannot take for granted - but we do. That will not be the case forever if we show that we are incapable of fulfilling our ONE JOB that actually matters to US military think tanks - not being a doormat. This is why the people who think Canada shouldn't have a military at all, and should abolish it are absolute retards. We don't need a big enough military to hold off a US invasion, we just need one good enough to bog down any invading force that wants to get to the real target.
