Probably not, and some natives will throw a hissy fit, this is why we can’t have nice things.
That fucker better be done proper and twin tracked the whole way. Over build it now, it will never ever have a chance to be expanded in the future.
Could the US annex Alberta if they wanted to? I often wonder.
If it would make Canada better, probably not.
Coffee row has been talking about this here in Saskatchewan since rumors of it began spreading. It's various chatter from visceral hate for the President to love for the idea of a railroad.
My thoughts:
This could be the first step towards Alberta leaving Canada. Maybe joining the US as a state, or as a territory with autonomy like Puerto Rico. There was some attempts to connect the railways with the US a few years ago and I suspect it never went through for various reasons, namely US interests pushing against it. But with a connection to the US and a deal for carriage of goods across their borders, Alberta would be able to reach new markets so there's no need to remain a part of Canada. I'm still not sure about being beholden to a single country that could revoke this at any time but considering our two provinces are locked between others now that refuse ALL attempts to grow their economies and reach markets, this has hope.
Maybe the whole Greenland purchase thing was a businessman's deception. Maybe he is really gunning to get Alberta into the union.
As long as no one mentions oil by rail then...no
