He just sees that Canada is more free than 1960s Portugal and more free than modern China and for that he thinks that we should feel grateful for that.

Thing is if we don't defend our liberty, we could one day become China. Hell we could literally be annexed by China. This is a concept that is lost on even people who were born, raised and educated here.

This is why education is important. But quality education. Modern public education is just indoctrination camps.
