Tools masters just have a different agenda
I don't think that's it. I don't think O'Toole has masters. He's an outsider unlike Poilievre who's with the party establishment. O'Toole only entered politics in 2012, whereas Poilievre has been around since 2004.
Consider this:
- On 23 Jan 2020, Poilievre withdrew from the leadership race.
- Two days later, McKay announced his candidacy.
That's not a coincidence. The party elders asked Poilievre to step aside because it was MacKay's turn. They've been grooming MacKay since the early 2000's for PM. Deputy leader of the CPC, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Minister of National Defense, Minster of Justice. That's the resume of someone who's being groomed for the top spot. They probably told Poilievre he could be next in line after MacKay if he stepped aside and let MacKay take this one.
But then an outsider (O'toole) won the leadership, screwing up the establishment's succession plan.
The fact that O'Toole is an outside and Poilievre is an establishment favourite probably puts them at odds. O'toole demoting Poilievre was probably a power-play, i.e. O'toole telling the party elder they're not in charge anymore.
