In the US context ....
-
What you call modern day Liberal can be thought of as your Democrats/progressives/woke/socialists/left-wing populists
-
What you call modern day Conservatives can be thought as your RINO Republicans
-
What you call "alt-right" can be thought of as right-wing populists
-
Many modern-day conservatives are effectively classical liberals (i.e., the original meaning of liberal, not the present-day label that's attached to Marxists)
The flip of script you have observed, I would take a guess in part is due to who has the power at that particular time.
Presently, the Left have captured most of the political power & are willfully using it to marginalize the Right. It seems that political law of "anything that isn't explicitly right-wing will eventually become left-wing" has played out & proven to be true.
The Left currently have the government in many Western countries, they dominate the media & social media, they have big businesses, they have the schools, they have many of the institutions, and they have much of the culture.
As such, the present-day Right stands against many of these advances by the Left.
In the past, when conservatism was still stronger (watch TV shows/movies from the 80's/90's/early 2000's and you'll see signs of this), the Left was actively subverting the Right to gain the power.
