In my opinion, when someone makes a stand for what they believe is right, in the face of seemingly insurmountable odds, dispite losing hard and being tossed to the ropes, people will root for that person. People like underdogs. I'm no psychologists, so don't ask me why that is the case. But that might answer your question.
