I told my dad (who is in the high risk category. Elderly with cancer) that if we don't open up our schools, small children are going to be legitimately socially and cognitive retarded being deprived of in-person class instruction for 6+ months and social interaction with their peers. And my dad (who is terrified of getting COVID-19) was just like "hey, times are tough. That's life." His grandkids are all grown up now. No great grandkids. I don't have any children myself. And he has a high chance of dying of cancer within the next 5 years (if the doctors are not able to control the spread of his cancer effectively or fast enough). Not all boomers are selfish but a large portion of our population is literally like "fuck the children, save the elderly and sick."

I feel torn on this issue as I don't want the elderly and sick to get fucked up (especially not my dad who relying on me more these days because of his age and need of cancer treatment. Being faced with mortality does suck and it's human nature to want to survive as long as you can) but there's no such thing as a win-win decision here. You can't sacrifice the young for the old and sick.
