It's not really shit, but it depends upon how old you are, where you live, how hard you are working and what you expect to get out of life.
I've left a couple of fairly good high-paying jobs in the past because the performance expectations were about 10X what I was actually getting paid.
I have the attitude that even subjectively good money isn't worth it if you're still getting ripped off, or your health is being affected.
On the other hand, 50k is about the Canadian average pay, I think. Hell, I think that the average household income is still less than 80k in Toronto.
So, it all depends upon how you look at it.
I would say that people that make money at the low end are absolutely nuts to be living in a city like Toronto.
Have you considered any satellite cities of Toronto? Or, the Golden Horseshoe region?
