What's really happening is that it's extremely rare for a complete outsider to be elected president. There have only been five US presidents ever who weren't professional politicians. Eisenhower being the last before Trump.

And since Eisenhower, Washington has become an utterly corrupt swamp. Everybody has dirt on each other and that's how the whole corrupt edifice manages to keep standing. Bill Clinton himself said "House of Cards is 99% real". That's how bad it is.

The absolute worst thing that can happen to an institutionally corrupt Washington establishment is for an outsider - someone that nobody has any control over via compromising dirt - to be elected president and take command of the DoJ, FBI and everything else. That's a doomsday scenario for the swamp. Because that president can drop the hammer on the network of corruption, and there's nothing anyone can do to stop him.

That's why they had to try and make dirt up on Trump. I.E. Russia collusion. That's why they've been desperately trying fake impeachments, why they're talking about 25th amendment removals constantly, why their media mouthpieces run almost exclusively negative coverage of Trump, why debate commissions are stacked against him etc etc. That's the establishment attacking a foreign object like white blood cells because that foreign object threatens to destroy them. Hell, it campaigned on destroying them (drain the swamp).

If you really want to understand what's going on, just listen to Trump's inauguration speech. It's what he promised to do in that speech that has the establishment desperately trying to bring him down by any means necessary.

That's what's really going on. The polarization of the public is downstream of this because the establishment media have gone completely berserk trying to incite hatred for Trump and his supporters. And the effects of that are manifesting in riots, murders, people getting fired for supporting Trump etc etc.
