Ventilators require technicians, which are in short supply. They also have to shove a plastic pipe down your throat, which risks infection. If I recall properly, they were using them at a higher setting than what was safe, damaging the lungs to attempt to counter the disease.

I believe the primary focus (where needed) is to just increase the oxygen (without the ventilator), which can be done much more safety, and with minimal oversight.

From what I recall, they were reporting they needed to use the ventilators at such a strong setting to counter the disease, they were damaging the lungs. I think they have since switched over a machine that just increases the amount of oxygen
