I know the MSM is left-leaning and soft-selling the march towards ever growing governmental oversight. General public aren't really students of history, or are looking at it through a leftist lens so they're blind to the failures of socialist governments that history is pockmarked with. Or at best they're of the ilk that "maybe those weren't true socialist republics." Like trying a form of government that fails reality-testing time and again will work if it's just "done right".

Best-case scenario, people fall for it and it "functions" to some extent, until the people manning the money press stop caring about price stability and hyperinflate the currency for their cronies, since the people are totally disenfranchised and rife for fleecing. Literally no means of pushing back once the government gets big enough.

Trump is the rare kind of push back against that, he's hitting all the right buttons for at least trying to fight against the US being averaged into world communism, which will lead to the ultimate screw job against the public. You thought the great leap forward was bad, think of marxism on an international scale. That's the end game of the elite. Probably will lead to some kind of insurmountable class divide with the "chosen few" merging with technology and becoming indominable and the rest of us fighting for scraps.
