I got lucky and had some really good ones in high school. One in particular started a philosophy course. It really changed my life and without it I wouldn't have questioned the bullshit. Acts (aka murder, looting, rape, etc.) should have laws but items (drugs, guns, fast cars, etc) should be up to the individual to make informed decisions on. If they abuse said items (kill someone with a gun) then that is an action that is illegal under law. Objects do not have a mind of their own. A spoon does not make you fat nor does a pencil make spelling mistakes. Humans need to take individual responsibility for their actions. We have gotten so lazy that we rely on the government to be responsible for us.
