Marion Ashton, who works with Black youths at the advocacy group Sankofa Foundation, says a video posted on Instagram by blackyouthcollectiveyyc was recorded by students at Bishop McNally High School last year where a white teacher is heard casually using the offensive word.
In the video, the teacher, which students say is a substitute, is speaking to a group of Black students in the school hallway and comments on the black licorice they are eating. She says the candy used to be called “N-word babies” and only cost a penny for three pieces.
