Nailed it. It social/cult programming. First step is suspension of logic and loyalty to the cult. Next remove individuality, masks do this wonderfully. Then the following step are exactly as you say, you become vulnerable to their programming subconsciously and thus can be lead down the fiery path to your own destruction.
