It's become lost in time but the original "vaccines cause autism" controversy wasn't even directly related to vaccines. There was a mercury-containing preservative called thiomersal that was being added to the MMR vaccine. Some people speculated that injecting infants with mercury was causing neurological problems. It wasn't true but it wasn't a crazy theory.
