Almost all deaths are multifactorial. For example you might have a year long battle with cancer before you contact pneumonia and die. Which killed you? Cancer or pneumonia? Realistically you could say that both were contributing factors in your death. However where a disease is of unknown lethality it's hard to say how many of the cases are actually contributing factors to the deaths so the Experts™ have decided to count all of them.
By this logic though HPV is one of the deadliest disease known to man as the majority of people are infected with at least one strain of it and as we know death with HPV equals death from HPV.
