Depends on your skill set. Banking, legal, teaching, logistics, retail, hospitality, etc. There is a lot of demand for expertise in many fields. The primary language for expats is English. Depending on which country you want to settle in knowing local languages may help. Singapore, Malaysia and The Philippines conduct the bulk of their business in English. Indonesia less so but Indonesian is not a difficult language. Thailand and Vietnam would generally require a little more knowledge of Thai or Vietnamese. That said I have known quite a few successful expats in Jakarta, Bangkok and HCM City who spoke primarily English.
Start talking to people who have lived there or live there. It’s currently tougher to move because of Covid, but this will pass. I’m currently relocating from Singapore to Bali, and it’s been a challenge because of travel restrictions. It’s also been a challenge because I’ve been out of Singapore since July and my wife is handling the move. If you haven’t been to the region take a trip when when the shit settles. It’s really an interesting part of the world. Lots of Canadians there too, and you can play hockey in many cities there.
