Yes, États means States.
United States of America is Les États Unis d'Amerique.
But, Frenchies who get Americanised do say "Les States".
"I'm spending my vacation in the United States" -> "J'm'en va en vacances dans les States".
A lot of English is making it's way into French, and, well, a lot of Anglophones are simply making their way into Québec.
No wonder businesses get canceled for using a non-French word on the menu.
They somehow try to make it a point that you HAVE to speak french, to save the French culture, but then keep importing millions of immigrants, who aren't French.
They pass a minimum test to know if they know some French words, but there's no way they are speaking French at home.
Culture my ass. It's just that a bunch of boomers in power don't know enough English, and/or their English sucks, so they're terrified they'll have to use it.
