Judging by the Statscan mortality data coming out of Quebec that I have seen, COVID-19 did contribute to excess mortality in 2020 relative to 2019. COVID-19's severity and lethality however is greatly exaggerated by the liberal mainstream media.
There's an extra 3,700 deaths in Quebec from March 15-October 31 2020 compared to March 17-November 2 2019. While COVID-19 diagnosed deaths during that period was 5,500. And COVID-19 presumptive deaths (these could be some other acute respiratory illness since they didn't get swabbed) were an additional 920.
3,700 extra deaths across a 33 week sample may sound like a lot. Until you consider that there were 44,250 all-cause mortalities. So deaths went up by 9.12% year-to-year.
Anywhere from 33-42% of the COVID-19 deaths were basically people who were going to die within that 33 week period regardless.
It's fair to say this is the worst epidemic we had since the 1918 Flu. But the 1918 Flu was far, far more lethal.
And this is the province that had the highest COVID death toll.
The Ontario data is still too messy because there's too many deaths of unknown origin in Ontario on the books (about 6,255) since March 15th.
It's also very likely that mortality will be down in subsequent years (if not 2021 then 2022, 2023, etc.) because a lot of "dry tinder" (old vulnerable people) was culled in 2020 and January 2021.
Yeah we would need more time to tell what the long-term impact COVID-19 is going to have on the death rates. COVID-19 is more efficient at finishing off old sick people than the flu. But then those people were going to die from a heart attack, cancer, Alzheimer's, pneumonia, FLU, etc. maybe a year or two down the road anyways. When you're 85+ years old and your body starts to break down, something is gonna getcha eventually. A 93 year old relative of mine with dementia in a nursing home died of COVID-19. He was dead man walking already. It sounds cruel but it sucks to live with Alzheimer's Disease. There is no cure for Alzheimer's Disease. Yet.
Death is not something that our society is comfortable with talking about. We haven't achieved immortality yet. So for the time being, death comes for us all. And we are so desperate to cheat death that we have decided to print money to oblivion and take away the essence of living itself in order to fight death. Given the capital mobility of the bourgeoisie, we can't just tax rich people to pay for all these lockdown measures. Society is going to pay the price for these lockdowns with inflation.
