(Some) laws exist to protect us - seat belts are mandatory or else you get fined. (People protested them when they were first introduced much like people are now "I don't need some gvnt telling me what to do, isnt this a free country etc") Murder, drinking & driving obviously outlawed, because they infringe on other people's rights to not be flattened by a truck. Sometimes a government has to step in and make things how they need to be to protect everybody. It's just how it be.
