If a company stops paying dividends, that company pretty much dead financially/investment wise. Even if you have worst earnings/quarter ever, you pay the dividend no matter what for companies that pay dividends regularly. There are companies with decades of never missing a dividend.

If a company is in trouble, they slash dividends or temporarily cancel them.
A quarter billion handout is a subsidy and plain taxpayer theft.
If a company can't raise money through bonds or product or whatever, they need to be put down like a rabid dog.
