About 25 years ago, elementary schools had home economics (cooking and sewing) and shop class (woodwork and sheetmetal spot welding.) Boys and girls had to take both. And then they were gone, but teacher salaries and benefits still went up...
Man I remember shop class. It really can bring the best out of some kids. I had some classmates who were complete animals, majority of the teachers (female) absolutely despised them. Mostly because they couldn't be controlled by the teachers. The teachers would always start shit with these guys and find anything they can nitpick in order to send these kids to the Principal's office.
But as soon as shop class starts, these kids will completely do a 180 and become the most focused students ever. Even the nerds couldn't keep up with these guys during shop class.
