Omg, they can’t even translate simple phrase correctly he said “one usually blames others for what he is himself guilty of”
Putin does not say “it takes one to know one” that’s literally a mistranslation. What he said is a kids saying that I can roughly translate as: “If one calls people names, those names best apply to themselves”
The idiom that Putin used is not translated correctly. A closer translation would be: "You really are whatever you call others" - "Кто как обзывается, тот так и называется"
"it takes one to know one" this is such a poor and manipulative translation. What he really said, and I'm quoting the Russian word for word: "The one and how the one insults, is the one who's naming/insulting himself". But ah no biggie, because no one's going to pay attention to that
“It takes one to know one” (or the similar one “pot meet kettle”) may be decent idiomatic translation that sounds better, but is not really what Putin said and it is subtly misleading. A better translation, though not idiomatic, is a little different but with entirely different meaning: “what one calls out is how one is”. The difference is subtle yet huge. The first idiomatic translation implies that both are one and the same. But the proper translation deals with projection, meaning that only the one who calls it is the way he calls it.
