To cops, screwdrivers are knives. Especially if you're Native.
I remember a case in Alberta where cops served a no-knock warrant
on the wrong address and found a woman who was making a sandwich
holding a knife, stunned by them knocking the door in. They shouted
at her to drop the knife, she didn't, and they shot her. Turns out,
she was deaf but could read lips ... but they had tactical masks on.
Of course there was found to be no wilful wrongdoing on the part of
the cops, as it was "a simple clerical error".
I also loved that they shot the naked man in Toronto who hadn't hurt anyone
but neighbors reported him as a known mental patient who was having an
issue and needed "help".
If you report that someone who is trying to end their life,
the cops will probably show-up and help them.
Didn't know makeshift prison shanks were considered knifes.
