There may be sense is creating a second canal that runs parallel but it would be a massive undertaking with little benefit outside situations like this. I doubt anything is going to be done about it unless this becomes a reoccurring problem.
We need to see how bad navigation errors were. If this is human error, nothing needs to change except perhaps qualifications of canal vessel command.
