to be fair, the Romans (who came later) took a lot of their culture from Ancient Greece. In turn, the Greeks learned a lot from Ancient Egypt. A surprising amount of Western culture was born in Ancient Egypt.
Justinian took Rome back during the Byzantine years as well, so the Eastern Empire had control of much of the Italian Peninsula even after the fall in 476 for quite some time.
