We now live in a timeline where fucking Russia gets to point at Canada and call it a tyrannical, authoritarian dictatorship.
And they're right.
Governments never give back power willingly once it's been ceded to them. Once your rights are gone, they're extremely hard to get back.
Governments, even the democratic ones, are constantly seeking more power. Not necessary because they're wantonly evil (sometimes that's why), but more often because it just makes their jobs easier the more power they have. For example, think of how much easier it would be for the police to do their jobs if they didn't need a warrant to tap your phone or search your house? Or think of how much easier it would be to legislate if you didn't have to put bills through an elected parliament and the executive could instead just pen laws and enact them unilaterally at will?
The whole point of constitutions, bills of rights, charters of rights and freedoms etc are to limit the government's ability to seize more power. Governments will always try to seize more power, and all it takes is a little fear to get people to look the other way and let the gov't grab a bunch more power. See: the Patriot act after 9/11. The same thing is going on now with this 'pandemic'. People are giving up their rights enthusiastically because they're frightened and they think the government protect them if they just give the gov't a little more power. It's a classic power grab strategy.
