imagine for a week our phones and internet went down. What then? This is just a day so far. We rely on tech to much with no redundancy or fault tolerance. #WalkingOnThePrecipice

It's mostly the legacy industries that have little redundancy in place. Except landlines, they build those to survive nuclear war.
When my cellphone dies eventually I am digging out the roatary phone and using that. More and more I can see that the cellphones are just part of the big mouse trap.
VoIP, why does the line matter at all? If you don't take your phone out of the house then surely you don't need a nuclear proof phone line at home. Most emergency's don't happen at home I'd say.
Teleco's have been using hybrid copper-fiber since the late 70's, and still maintained a rock solid network.
Rogers just cheeped out at every corner.
