East Asian here, grew up and living in Lower Brainland for the past 20+ years. I call this bullshit and pure propaganda.
I've had people tell me to "go back to my own country" several times in the past 20 years, those people were bullies or Karens to begin with, or I was simply being a dick and they couldn't come up with a better insult.
I'm not saying there aren't racists in this country, I'm sure there are but I'm also sure it's not as widespread as the media depicts it to be.
Now if you go to Richmond or Chinatown, there are immigrants who simply refuse to integrate into mainstream society (ie speaking their own language everywhere, expecting others to follow their cultural norms instead of changing to integrate into mainstream society). This has become even more apparent in the past 10 years with the new flood of mainland Chinese "immigrants". And guess what, the most racially excluding people I've met are Asians, Indians, and middle Easterners.
I disagree with the version of multiculturalism that government is pushing, I believe if one were to immigrate to another country, one should learn the local culture and integrate. Whether to retain their original culture in private is up to them.
If you got to Vancouver everything is in Mandarin. It’s not in English or French. They have lost all Canadian culture there to foreigners. I’m not against foreigners, but when they expect OUR culture and lives to change for them, that’s over the line.
There is nothing friendly about Vancouver, there is no community, everyone there is there for their own needs.
