Seriously, the only reason it's in the news is because we care that it's part of our history. Most other countries hide this part of their histories, either that or they just wiped people out so there's no one to talk about it. I remember spending months in my Canadian history classes only focusing on Native issues.
If we were the awful country these people think we are, we wouldn't be hearing about these issues everywhere we go.
It wasn't even a 'massacre', we basically declared war on them without them even realizing it. Wars always have casualties. That's the way that war works.
What baffles is me is that we learned this in high school. My grade 11 history teacher did not gloss over the residential schools history and and yet somehow people are acting like this is new. If you've been to high school in this country you should know this already.
The truth and reconciliation commision lasted from 2008 to 2015. The report came out in 2015. Five BILLION dollars were paid out in damages.
But yeah, the media is stirring this one now, in complete synch with what is going on in the US and Europe.
