Why does the CBC believe that all blacks in British North America before 1830 were slaves? I suppose there were so few blacks at that time it's difficult to know much about them at all, so made-up shit can't be disproven.
But never forget: slavery was never legal in Canada. Almost all the slave owners in pre-Canada were aboriginal. A Canadian black today is a hundred time more like to have a slave merchant in his family tree as a slave in pre-Canada.
Not only didn't Canada have slavery but any slaves who escaped the US and make it here was given 5 acres land free. They could farm or do whatever they wanted.
After the civil war some returned to the US because they had family there.
