That church was exceptionally "progressive" but when people see baptist they assume ultraconservative fundamentalists. I believe they already had gays and one other trans person in "leadership" roles so there wasn't really an issue with the remaining members of the congregation about that kind of thing, so the real issue was this "pastor" 's power tripping and self-promotion. I remember reading something by a former member of the church claiming there was a long back story to this, the members of the congregation did nothing to curtail a takeover of the church by progressives, and that the resulting mess was inevitable. It's a dead church, really no better than any UC church.
