Probably got wind that he'd lose in the senate and end up looking bad.
Yes if he lost it in the senate he would likely be forced into an election he can't afford.
Many of the NDP members - especially Jagmeet - must be livid. Something tells me they may not be as accommodating to him next time he threatens them with a confidence motion they don't like.
Would have been interesting to be a fly on the wall in the Liberal cabinet over the past week or two.
