The struggle is not so much left versus right or communism versus fascism, it's authoritarianism versus freedom. Hitler was, of course, authoritarian, but so was Stalin, Mao, Pol Pot, Kim Il Sung, and all left-wing governments. Sooner or later authoritarianism leads to corruption, repression, and murder. With a 100% failure rate, any reasonable person would abandon socialism or any other authoritarian ideology. However socialist are unmoved by the mountains of corpses that their ideology has produced.
