I agree with you, but I'd argue that the lies on the information network didn't have the effect that you're assuming.
Politics aren't as omnipresent in people's minds as much as you'd assume. You know what was? Netflix.
You could actually chart out the phases of the lockdown and the reactions by watching what was big on streaming video; the cable TV of today.
Phase one. Contagion suddenly drops on all platforms at once which demarks the time when everyone freaks out and demands to stay home.
Phase two. Tiger King drops on Netflix marking the let's get drunk and do drugs while we wait to see what happens part. The fun denial phase of the lockdown.
Phase three. The cooking show phase. Demarked by sourdough, homebrewing and gourmet food.
Phase four. The "eating places" phase. Demarked by massive demand for takeout food with take-out booze at BAR PRICES, and pubs acting like they were charities.
Phase five. The part where they'd watched literally all the TV available on the streaming platforms and watched all the racially divisive black-centric propaganda on netflix. All at once. For hours on end. With a joint in the hand and a beer on the table to make sure the propaganda was maximally absorbed.
From then it was like watching someone who hadn't been a Scout as a kid trying to light a fire. Breonna Taylor. Armed Arbery. Then they gave up, got the gas out and George Floyded an out-of-control inferno.
Lies through the internet, political statements and the news is minor because there's a large number of people who are unengaged and uninterested. Propaganda though, that inflammatory and controlling because it's aimed at the dumbest and gets them whipped into a fury of emotions that they barely understand and aims them at the cause of the propagandists' choosing.
